Waterproofing Testing: Which Test Do You Actually Need?

Not every waterproofing problem requires the same test.

Waterproofing testing is not a one-size-fits-all process.

The right test depends on the question you are trying to answer.

Start with the question

Before selecting a test, establish:
1. What is the suspected defect?
2. What information is missing?
3. What decision needs to be made?
4. Which testing method can provide useful evidence?

Testing should support the investigation rather than simply generate a test result.

Common waterproofing investigation areas

Depending on the project, investigation may consider:

Membrane integrity: Is the waterproofing system continuous and intact?

Moisture: Is moisture present within the substrate or building element?

Adhesion: Is the membrane, coating or sealant adequately bonded?

Substrate condition: Is the substrate suitable for the waterproofing system or proposed remediation?

Falls and drainage: Is water able to drain as intended?

Sealants and joints: Are joints and interfaces contributing to water ingress?

Water resistance: Can controlled testing provide evidence about the performance of the waterproofing system?

Why test selection matters

Using the wrong test can produce information that does not answer the actual problem.

A strong investigation therefore follows:

Observation → Hypothesis → Test → Result → Interpretation

rather than:

Test → Result → Guess

Testing should be interpreted in context

A test result does not necessarily explain the entire defect.

For example, a single failed location may identify a local issue, while the building may have a broader systemic problem.

Testing should therefore be considered alongside:
• visual observations
• building history
• drawings
• construction details
• environmental conditions
• previous repairs
• other test results

What should a waterproofing testing report provide?

A useful report should clearly explain:
• what was tested
• why it was tested
• how it was tested
• where it was tested
• what the results showed
• what limitations apply
• what the results mean for the investigation

The best waterproofing test is not necessarily the most complicated test.

It is the test that answers the right question.

Test with a purpose. Interpret with evidence.

How We’re Different From a Waterproofing Contractor

Waterproofing Integrity Waterproofing Contractor
Diagnoses the cause Independent testing before any recommendation Often assumes, based on the job being priced
Recommends the fix Specifies what’s correct, regardless of who installs it Recommends what they install
Financial interest in the outcome Advisory fee only Paid to perform the work
Verifies the finished work Independently tests and reports on the completed work Self-verifies their own work
